The bicycle transport service on Hellenic Train services is aligned with Regulation (EU) 782/2021, according to which railway undertakings are required to provide passengers with the possibility to carry bicycles, provided that this does not adversely affect the operation of the service and that the train has the necessary capacity.

A. Transport on long-distance trains

Bicycle transport is available on trains equipped with a luggage van:

  • IC50, IC51, IC56, IC57 (Athens – Thessaloniki – Athens) 
  • 520, 521 (Athens – Lianokladi – Athens) 

Transport is carried out in accordance with the applicable provisions governing registered luggage under the Hellenic Train Passenger and Luggage Tariff.

Conditions:

  • Fare: €5 per bicycle (at station ticket offices) 
  • A valid passenger ticket is required for the same journey (same route, service, date, and time) 
  • The owner is responsible for loading and unloading the bicycle 
  • Transport is subject to available capacity 

Maximum number: up to 5 bicycles per train 

Compensation

  • In case of loss, if the amount of damage is not proven, compensation of €80 per bicycle is paid 
  • In case of damage, compensation of €40 per bicycle is paid 
  • In addition, the paid fares and any related charges are refunded 
  • To claim compensation, a written application must be submitted to Hellenic Train 

B. Transport without charge (selected lines)

Bicycle transport free of charge is permitted as follows:

  • Athens – Chalkida / Piraeus – Airport / Piraeus – Kiato: up to 4 bicycles (carriages 2 & 4) 
  • Thessaloniki – Larissa: up to 5 bicycles 
  • Kiato – Aigio / Tavros – Kiato / Paiania – Ano Liosia: up to 2 bicycles per carriage 
  • Thessaloniki – Florina / Drama / Serres: 1 bicycle per carriage 
  • Katakolo – Pyrgos – Olympia: up to 2 bicycles 
  • Patras – Rio: up to 4 bicycles 
  • Patras – Kato Achaia: up to 2 bicycles 

Notes:

  • The owner bears full responsibility for the safety of the bicycle and for preventing damage 
  • Placing bicycles between seats is not permitted 
  • Relevant signage will be installed on trains indicating whether bicycle transport is permitted in each carriage 

Routes operated by buses

On the following routes (currently operated by buses), the conditions of Section C apply:

  • Lianokladi – Stylida 
  • Larissa – Volos 
  • Palaiofarsalos – Kalambaka 
  • Drama – Xanthi 
  • Drama – Alexandroupoli 
  • Kiato – Patras 
  • Alexandroupoli – Xanthi – Alexandroupoli 

C. Bicycle transport on buses

The transport of only one folding bicycle is permitted, under the following conditions:

  • Maximum dimensions: 100 × 60 × 25 cm 
  • Placement in the luggage compartment 
  • Mandatory use of a storage case/bag 
  • No fare is charged 

Restrictions

Bicycle transport is not permitted on the following tourist railway services:

  • Ano Lechonia – Milies (Pelion railway) 
  • Diakopto – Kalavryta (Rack railway)
